(4788) Simpson is an asteroid of the main belt , which on October 4, 1986 by the American astronomer Edward LG Bowell at the Anderson Mesa Station ( IAU code 688) of the Lowell Observatory in Coconino County was discovered.

The asteroid was named in 1991 after the British composer and music writer Robert Simpson (1921–1997), whose symphonies and string quartets are influenced by Anton Bruckner , Carl Nielsen and Jean Sibelius .
