(5048) Moriarty is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 1 April 1981 by the US American astronomer Edward LG Bowell at the Anderson Mesa Station ( IAU code 688) of the Lowell Observatory in Coconino County was discovered.

The asteroid was named after Professor Moriarty , the antagonist of Sherlock Holmes in Arthur Conan Doyle's novels .
