(5490) Burbidge is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery was made as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory ( IAU code 675) .
The asteroid was named after the American astrophysicist Margaret Burbidge (1919-2020), who was the first female director of the Royal Greenwich Observatory from 1972 to 1973 .
