(6012) Williammurdoch is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 22 September 1990 by the British - Australian astronomer Robert McNaught at the Siding Spring Observatory ( IAU code 413) near Coonabarabran in New South Wales was discovered in Australia.
The asteroid was named on August 10, 2014 after the Scottish engineer and inventor William Murdoch (1754-1839), who invented a number of important applications of the steam engine, such as the locomotive and gas lighting using town gas , in Britain's early industrial phase .
