(70) Panopaea is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on May 5, 1864 by the Franco-German astronomer Hermann Mayer Salomon Goldschmidt .
The asteroid was named after Panopaea , one of the Nereid daughters of the sea god Nereus .
