(8031) William Dana is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 7 March 1992 by the Japanese astronomer Seiji Ueda and Hiroshi Kaneda at the observatory in Kushiro ( IAU code was discovered 399).

The celestial body is named after the American test pilot William H. Dana (* 1930), who completed 16 flights in the X-15 program and was only awarded his astronaut wings as a NASA pilot on August 24, 2005 .
