(9392) Cavaillon is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 10 August 1994 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory ( IAU code 809) of the European Southern Observatory in Chile was discovered.
The asteroid belongs to the Vesta family , a large group of asteroids named after (4) Vesta , the second largest asteroid and third largest celestial body in the main belt.
(9392) Cavaillon was named on November 20, 2002 after the French commune of Cavaillon in the Vaucluse département in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region , which has been known since Roman times for the cultivation and trade of early vegetables and early fruit and therefore is sometimes also called the capital of melons .
