(9481) Menchú is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery was made as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory ( IAU code 675) .
On April 2, 1999, the asteroid was named after the Guatemalan human rights activist Rigoberta Menchú (* 1959), who was the youngest ever winner of the 1992 Nobel Peace Prize.
