(9677) Gowlandhopkins is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery was made as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory ( IAU code 675) .
The asteroid was named on November 11, 2000 after the English biochemist and physician Frederick Gowland Hopkins (1861–1947), who received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1929 for his research into vitamins .
