1898. Los últimos de Filipinas ( Spanish for 1898. The last in the Philippines ) is a Spanish historical film from 2016 . He tells of a detachment of Spanish soldiers who were besieged in the Philippine city of Baler for 337 days . The film was nominated nine times at the 31st edition of the Goya Film Prize and won in the category Best Costume Design .

In 1896 the Philippine Revolution broke out, trying to shake off colonial power after more than 300 years of Spanish occupation. After the small Spanish garrison in the coastal town of Baler was destroyed by Katipunanen , a 50-man troop was sent out in 1898 to restore law and order. After the small unit has established itself in the only stone-built building, the church, the siege by 800 Filipino soldiers begins on June 1, 1898. Cut off from all communication and care, the situation for those trapped becomes more and more dramatic. When Spain loses control of the Philippines during the Spanish-American War , the soldiers are completely dependent on themselves. But the commandant of the Spaniards, Lieutenant Martín Cerezo, does not want to give up and so the siege lasts for 337 days.

Filming took place in the Canary Islands and Equatorial Guinea , although the story of the film is set in Luzon . The film is a co-production by Enrique Cerezo , the current President of Atlético Madrid , Pedro Costa Musté , 13 TV , CIPI Cinematografica SA and ICAA . The budget was estimated at six million dollars.
