2-Methyl-2,4-pentanediol is used as a solvent and intermediate in the production of other chemical compounds. The compound is also used to control the flow properties of industrial products such as paints, varnishes, coatings, detergents, solvents and hydraulic fluids. It acts as a thickener in cosmetic products. It serves as an adhesion promoter and additive to hydraulic fluids, printing inks and cement. It is also used as a blood volume expander and in addition, it is used as a solvent for cleaning and coloring products. It is also used in laboratory studies as a precipitant and cryoprotectant in protein crystallography.
