2-Methylthiobenzothiazole is a chemical compound from the group of thiazoles , which is formed as a breakdown product of the fungicide (benzothiazol-2-ylthio) methylthiocyanate or the vulcanization accelerator mercaptobenzothiazole . A few tons are released every year in Germany through tire wear . The substance is aerobically difficult to biodegrade in the sewage treatment plant and can therefore be detected in surface waters in the two to three-digit ng · l −1 range.
