2019 OK is a near-Earth asteroid of the Apollo-type and is 90 m diameter from the Brazilian one day was discovered at the Earth from a close flyby SoNear Observatory on July 25 of 2019.

train

2019 OK moves at a distance of 0.4635 ( perihelion ) to 3.4315 ( aphelion ) astronomical units in 992 days and 17 hours around the sun . The eccentricity of the orbit is therefore 0.7620. Its orbit is only slightly inclined towards the ecliptic at 1.406 degrees and crosses the earth's orbit at a relative speed of 24 km / s. Its intrinsic rotation , which is changed by the YORP effect over time and on which the direction of the Jarkowski effect on the exact path depends, is not yet known.

2019 OK passed the earth on July 26, 2019, less than 72,000 kilometers above the earth's surface. It flew at a speed of about 25 km / s relative to the earth.

Since it is not supposed to come that close to the earth until at least 2200, it is not on the ESA's risk list.

Possible consequences of an impact

2019 OK would have released energy of a few megatons (TNT equivalent) in the event of an impact . The exact consequences of an impact would depend on the composition of the asteroid and the location and angle of the impact.
