Division history
The division was set up on August 26, 1939 as a division of the 3rd wave of formation in Berlin . When the war began, she was active in Poland and in 1940 gave her artillery departments to other units. After participating in Operation Weser Exercise in Denmark from April to June 1940, the 218th ID was inactive from August 1940 to February 1941. From December 1941 the 218th Infantry Division fought on the Eastern Front in the section of Army Group North . At the beginning of 1942, the 218th Infantry Division received the order to secure the Cholm traffic junction south of Lake Ilmen against attacks by the Soviet 3rd Shock Army , which later developed into the Battle of Cholm . Parts of the 218th ID belonged to the Scherer combat group, which defended the enclosed city.
In 1944 the 218th Infantry Division withdrew to the Baltic States and capitulated in 1945 in the Kurland Basin .
