Johann, who has only just moved in and does not yet know anyone in the new residential area, befriends the outsider Ludwig. Both spend a lot of time together and find a common passion in two without a helmsman (rowing without a helmsman). Because timing is extremely important in this sport, both train very hard and win race after race. When they are defeated by a pair of twins, they decide to become as similar as possible. They cut their hair and even share a school girl. As a pastime between training, competitions and school, the two restore a scrap motorcycle. Ludwig, who is doing his motorcycle license at the same time, wants to make the maiden voyage with Johann after winning the championship. In this, both are involved in an accident, in which it is not clear whether it was caused by Ludwig on purpose. Johann is seriously injured, but survives - in contrast to Ludwig.

The film-dienst was disappointed that the film "almost slavishly adheres to the novella, unfortunately also where the film medium would have required course corrections". While the “first-person narrator Johann drifting back and forth between a romantic attitude towards life and normal life pragmatics in the novel” works perfectly, the film remains “stuck halfway from realism to fantasy”. The production lacks "the boldness to support the storming and pressing inner world of the protagonists with appropriate means". The result remains "far below the level of better 'Tatort' crime novels".
On the other hand, the Top-Videonews page of the Children's and Youth Film Center gave a positive assessment . There it is said that the film is a "captivating 'coming of age' story" that "captivates the viewer from the start". The "convincing performance" of Jacob Matschenz and Tino Mewes was also praised. In the spotlight: The film emphasized that the “dreams, deeds and longings for death of young people [...] were treated sincerely” in the film. The Cinema ruled that the "unusual story that unspent cast and spectacular locations" would 2er without making "one of the most exciting German films of the year".
