Lists on the subject |
The 30 mm gun 2A42 is a Soviet automatic cannon caliber mm 30 × 165 . It was developed by the designers Grjasew and Schipunow around 1980 in the design office for device construction (KBP) in Tula . 2A42 is the GRAY index of the weapon used in the Soviet and now Russian armed forces.
technology
In the 1970s, the order was given to create an on-board weapon for aircraft and armored vehicles, which was to be used in particular to combat armored ground targets. The automatic cannons used so far were designed for use in aircraft and primarily intended against air targets. They therefore had a very high rate of fire, which was not desirable for use in combat helicopters or armored personnel carriers. The rate of fire of the 2A42 can be set to a slow or a fast mode, even single fire is possible. The weapon has a double belt feed for different types of ammunition, so that armor-piercing or explosive projectiles can be used. The recoil is dampened by a flat muzzle brake , which diverts the powder gases laterally and parallel to the ship's side. The tube recoil of about 30 mm further weakens the recoil. On Kamow models, the weapon is not attached under the fuselage, but to the right of it, in order to enable the lowest possible flight altitude.

variants
A version of the 2A42 continued to be built in Ukraine after the dissolution of the USSR is called the STM-2.
The 2A72 was derived from the 2A42, which has a sliding back barrel, which reduces the recoil of the weapon, so that it can also be used on lighter weapon platforms that would not be able to withstand the recoil of the 2A42. The version made in Ukraine is called STM-1.
