301/302 - The case is eaten (sometimes only 301/302 or in the spellings 301, 302 and 301-302 ) is a South Korean horror drama from 1995 by director Park Chul-soo . The film tells the story of two women with opposing eating disorders in a series of flashbacks . While one suffers from anorexia nervosa , i.e. eats too little, the other suffers from binge eating and therefore eats too much.

action

Two women live in apartments 301 and 302 in a residential complex in Seoul . Song-hee lives in apartment 301 and across from her, and Yun-hee lives in apartment 302. The film begins with a police questioning of Song-hee from apartment 301. Song-hee is questioned about the whereabouts of her neighbor, who was reported missing. The story of both women is told in a series of flashbacks.

The viewer learns that Yun-hee, the missing woman, was regularly sexually abused by her stepfather as a teenager . A situation from her youth is also described, in which a small neighbor child had a fatal accident. The little girl believed that Yun-hee was playing hide and seek with her, so she went into hiding in the cold room of the butcher's shop at Yun-hee's family business. Yun-hee forgot her promise and with it the girl. It occurs to her at night, but Yun-hee only finds the dead body in the chamber. In the course of her youth she developed eating and sexual disorders. She cannot eat anything and rejects all food, so she suffers from anorexia nervosa. This makes her very underweight. She later works as a writer for women's magazines.

Song-hee from apartment 301, on the other hand, is a passionate, very good cook. She cooks elaborate, partly self-made dishes with perfect precision. She suffers from binge eating and therefore regularly has cravings. Flashbacks portray their marriage, which ended in divorce. She suffered mentally from it when her husband did not finish her food or did not praise it strongly. In her view, she did not experience sufficient sexual affection from her husband and insufficient appreciation for her cooking skills. She killed their dog, cooked it and served it to her ignorant husband, whereupon he filed for divorce. The woman later justifies the decision to have cooked the dog with the interest and curiosity of wanting to cook with new ingredients.

When she moved into the apartment complex after the divorce, she wanted to develop a good relationship with her neighbor. Song-hee cooks for her neighbor. But since she already gets sick at the sight of food due to her eating disorder, Yun-hee always throws the dishes in the trash without eating them. When Song-hee found out, she had a tantrum and tried to force her neighbor to eat her meals. To do this, she takes the old dishes out of the rubbish bin and serves them back on plates. But when she learns that her neighbor actually has problems eating, she apologizes and tries to help her. From now on she keeps an eating diary and cooks various foods that she believes her sick neighbor can eat. But whenever Yun-hee actually eats something, she vomits. So after a while, Song-hee comes to the desperate conclusion that her neighbor cannot eat anything. Yun-hee wants to die and offers Song-hee to cook with her meat . Song-hee then stabs her neighbor, uses her meat as an ingredient in a dish and then eats it. After a couple of bites and a look at Yun-hee's severed head, however, she is in shock . The picture is then faded out and a lettering appears: So does this mean the end of your loneliness ...? Then you see Song-hee lying on her bed in the final scene. Yun-hee appears and tells Song-hee that she will now write a food diary for her. So Yun-hee will take care of Song-hee the same way Song-hee took care of her when she suffered from the eating disorder. This can be understood as an indication that Yun-hee's cause of her eating disorder is that she was eating the little neighbor child when she died in the cold room of the butcher's shop.

criticism

"A highly stylized attempt at the perversion of culinary delights with the means of visual stimuli: In tempting neon colors, the film reflects on the disgust in the midst of beauty when a fanatical cook first torments her husband and then her neighbor with her art."

"With brilliantly photographed images, recurring sequences and peppered irony, this 'cooking orgy' gives insights into the changing role of women in Korea."
