3D Dot Game Heroes ( Japanese 3D ド ッ ト ゲ ー ム ヒ ー ロ ー ズ ) is a computer game for the PlayStation 3 . It was developed by the Japanese studio Silicon Studio and belongs to the action adventure genre. It is distributed by From Software in Japan, Atlus in North America, and SouthPeak Games in Europe. The game uses a unique graphic style by realizing 2D retro graphics in a 3D environment through voxels .

The game was released in Japan on November 5, 2009, in North America on May 11, 2010, and in Europe on May 14, 2010, exclusively for the PlayStation 3 .

action

In the peaceful kingdom of Dotnia once lived six clergy who protected six mysterious bullets. After one day the shadow king Onyx learns about the legendary balls, he not only grabs the balls, but also kidnaps the keepers of them. He spreads fear and terror across the country until a hero with the holy sword appears on the scene and stands in his way. After defeating the villain and relegating it to a magical artifact, peace was restored in the land. Until the day a bishop stole this artifact and freed the spirit of onyx again. So a new hero is needed, in whose role the player can slip.

Gameplay

The game's gameplay is very similar to older 8-bit games, but mainly The Legend of Zelda . Players have to move their character from picture to picture, explore dungeons , defeat monsters, collect items and solve puzzles, as was the case with computer games in the past. When the game's life meter is full, the size of the sword increases enormously when you use it. The swords in the game can be individually edited and upgraded so that their length, width, strength, magic strength and other properties improve. Other items used in the game are boomerangs , lanterns, candles and various magical skills.

The existing monsters can be collected by hitting them with a special book. They are then entered in a kind of encyclopedia and can be viewed. Loading screens are also displayed in a gallery, often a nod to a classic video game. Furthermore, players can create their own character in the supplied 3D Sprite Editor.

development

The game first attracted attention through a teaser from From Software that only showed a die and a countdown to August 20, 2009. However, it was revealed by the Japanese video game magazine Famitsu before the countdown was over . The North American release was confirmed by Sony Computer Entertainment of America's official Twitter account in November 2009, while the European release date was announced in January 2010.

reception

The game received mostly positive reviews from critics. Famitsu rated the game with 30 out of 40 points with the statement that the game represents a grandiose homage to The Legend of Zelda and presents a variety of references to classic NES games, which makes it a "nostalgic journey". The pretty, blocky graphics that seamlessly connect old to new were also emphasized.

Jörg Luibl from the German game magazine 4Players rated the game with 86 out of 100 points. He praised the charming art design, the many puzzles, the music, the combat system, the exploration and the quests. He rated the story negatively, the lack of a diary function and the initially easy dungeons and bosses.

According to Famitsu , 17,300 copies of 3D Dot Game Heroes had sold by the end of 2009, making it the 463rd best-selling regional game. Atlus announced in October 2010 that the game had sold 160,000 times to date, six times the expectations they had met in advance.

Soundtrack

On November 25, 2009, the official soundtrack for the game was released on CD in Japan. There are 39 titles available with the songs from the game.

Trivia

  • Due to the great similarity to The Legend of Zelda , the game is viewed on the one hand as a homage and on the other hand as a parody of the classic.
  • The name of the Spelunker mode (an unlockable level of difficulty in which the player dies immediately on the first hit) refers to the computer game Spelunker from 1985, the difficulty of which is described as extremely difficult.
  • There are three different mini-games hidden in the game: Dash Circuit (a race over 3 laps against time), Blockout (based on the computer game Breakout ) and Block Defense (based on the game Tower Defense ).
