The 4º Carabinieri Cavalry Regiment , German 4. Carabinieri Regiment on horseback , is a cavalry - regiment in battalion strength of the Carabinieri , a military police force in Italy . The regiment is based in the Caserma Salvo D'Acquisto in the Tor di Quinto district in the north of Rome ( Municipio XV ), near the racecourse of the same name .
tasks
This last fully mounted regiment of the Italian armed forces , together with several riot police battalions, is subordinate to the 1st mobile brigade of the Carabinieri. The 4th Carabinieri regiment on horseback was formed on April 1, 1963 from smaller mounted units and together with three riot police regiments as the 4th regiment of the then XI. Subordinated to the Carabinieri Brigade. In addition to staff and supply units, it initially had a riding department and a mounted training department. The latter was handed over to the Carabinieri Training Legion in 1965 . From 1965 to 1968 it ran three mounted territorial departments based in Milan , Cagliari and Palermo . After that he was responsible for a riding department and the local riding center. From 1977 to 2007 the association only called itself “Carabinieri Regiment on Horses”, then the old ordinal number was added again.
Carosello storico
The regiment sees itself in the succession of the mounted parts of the Carabinieri since their foundation in 1814 and as the guardian of the old cavalry traditions of Italy. The cavalry attacks in Grenoble in 1815 and those in Pastrengo in 1848 play a special role in maintaining tradition . Pastrengo's symbolic re-enactment is part of the Carosello storico .
This formation riding, known as the “Historical Carousel of the Carabinieri”, is also reminiscent of the medieval knight tournaments , including the duel of Barletta . In the broadest sense it can also be compared to aerobatics . In Rome it is usually demonstrated by the regiment in the Villa Borghese in Piazza di Siena . It took place there on May 3, 1883 on the occasion of the wedding of Thomas von Savoyen-Genoa and Isabella von Bayern ; the Carabinieri performed it there for the first time on July 9, 1933 in historical uniforms and on this occasion received its current name. After the Second World War, the Carosello storico was repeatedly shown abroad, including 1953, 1966 and 1981 in Paris , 1958 in Brussels , 1963, 1966 and 1972 in Frankfurt am Main .
