p -Aminohippuric acid , also paraaminohippuric acid or 4-aminohippuric acid , is a chemical compound derived from hippuric acid . It is used in particular as a diagnostic tool for examining kidney function . As a condensation product of p- aminobenzoic acid and the amino acid glycine , it can occur in the human body as a metabolic product .

synthesis

p-Aminohippuric acid can be prepared by condensation of p-aminobenzoic acid with glycine. When using dehydrating agents this happens faster, but less clean. A more elegant method of preparation is the nitration of hippuric acid to p-nitrohippuric acid and subsequent reduction with a selective reducing agent to p-aminohippuric acid.

use

To examine kidney function and calculate renal blood flow , p- aminohippuric acid is administered as an infusion . Since p- aminohippuric acid is almost completely excreted by the kidneys via glomerular filtration (20–30%) and tubular secretion (70%), its clearance , the PAH clearance , corresponds to the renal plasma flow . This is used to calculate the renal blood flow.
