4-methoxyamphetamine (4-MA for short; also para- methoxyamphetamine, PMA ) is a psychotropic substance which, due to its structure, belongs to the phenol ether group and to the substituted amphetamines . It appears as part of ecstasy tablets .

synthesis

In PIHKAL the preparation is about from 4-methoxybenzaldehyde and nitroethane accessible Nitropropenderivat by reduction with lithium aluminum hydride described.

Pharmacological properties

PMA has a very amphetamine- like and slightly empathogenic effect. PMA acts as a releaser and reuptake inhibitor of monoamine neurotransmitters. The effective dosage is in the range from 10 to 30 mg, the duration of action is less than three hours.

hazards

The effect of PMA is very late, its effect is not as strong as that of MDMA . This easily tempts the consumer to overdose. PMA physically leads to an increase in pulse, blood pressure, body temperature and nystagmus . Overdosing can lead to vomiting, muscle cramps, breathing problems and, in the worst case, to organ failure, which can lead to coma or death. Body temperature can rise to over 40 ° C. Numerous deaths due to PMA overdose have occurred since the 1970s. Even today there are repeated deaths related to PMA.

Legal status in Germany

In the Federal Republic of Germany, PMA is a non-marketable narcotic due to its listing in Appendix I BtMG . Handling without permission is generally a criminal offense. Further information can be found in the main article Narcotics Law in Germany .
