88 Is Great is a collaboration album by the two rappers Albino and Mad Cap , which was released under their project name Plan 88 .

Emergence

Both albino and the hip-hop group Independenzia , of which Mad Cap is a member, are signed to the Art 4 Real record company. That was how the two artists met. Already on Albino's most recent solo album Survival Training , which was released on the label in 2006, Madcap was on the pieces Der Geigenkracher and 88 is great Gastrapper, on the latter together with his bandmate Tokin One. 88 is great should also be the core of the album of the same name, which came out two years later. This song is about right-wing extremism . The 88 is said to stand for hip-hop in this context , alluding to the fact that H is the eighth letter of the alphabet. The claim is made that the power to define symbols should not be left to the Nazis, since eighty-eight often represents a kind of code for " Heil Hitler " within the right-wing scene .

layout

On the relatively complex cover, the background is dark blue. The project name "PLAN 88" can be seen at the top, and below it is a map of the earth with the continents colored orange. In the background, the words "hiphopisgreat" or "88" are shown several times in pale colors. Below you can see the silhouettes of the heads of the two rappers in black and white, each holding a microphone and looking in the opposite direction. Above them is their respective stage name, between them a red, five-pointed star, which is mostly in the background, above which "HIP HOP" and underlined "fuck racism" stands. Immediately below this is the album title and the names of the guest rappers on the album. The artwork was done by Mad Cap.

albino

The booklet, which is mainly in the colors white and yellow, shows photos of Albino, Mad Cap and the guest rappers as well as the history of the album including the reasons for the creation of the album. In addition, the texts for Letter to the Enemy , Duds , Everywhere and Our Horizon are included, as well as right-wing extremist symbols are explained.

promotion

A video was made for the piece Our Horizon in 2009. It shows the two artists alternately against the backdrop of a city and against a snow-covered mountain landscape. The video also exists in a later remixed version of Madstorm.

One year after the album was released, Plan 88 released an exclusive song, Haus der Pein - Free Mumia , on the solidarity compilation Rage Against The Death Machine for Mumia Abu Jamal .

Texts

Stylistically, the album can be assigned to Conscious Rap . The texts are all very political and are presented very energetically; often a certain sarcasm can also be heard. Of all the albums Albino has worked on to date, 88 Is Great is the most aggressive.

Just like the title track, Violin Kracher was also featured on Albino's solo album Survival Training. Life and Death , on which Callya and Chaoze One rap, appeared four months earlier on Callya's album Vergessenes Feuer . It is about the cycle of life and at the same time represents one of the quieter songs, as well as our horizon .

A recurring theme on the album is right-wing extremism . In addition to the title piece, Letter to the Enemy also deals with this issue. An unspecified neo-Nazi is addressed and explained to him how despicable his worldview is.

reception

The album received mostly positive reviews. The left internet portal roteboerde.de characterized the album as "political, provocative, emotional and authentic" and came to the following conclusion: "The '88' as Nazi symbolism is being replaced by a creative, positive and life-affirming force: HipHop!"
