Survival Training is the third solo album by the Lübeck rapper Albino . It was released on September 15, 2006.

Emergence

After his second album Vogelfrei , Albino first recorded the record Echolot with the Cologne rapper Nesti under the name Syndikat . At the same time his EP No Peace was released . The name "Survival Training" was deliberately chosen as the title for his third album because, according to his own statements, it reflects life and contains no superficialities.

“I rap about life. As always, actually. It's about the core of the human being. I don't want to deal with the trimmings, bling bling or superficialities. I want to get in touch with people, my raps should go deep into people, they should move and stimulate thought. Survival training is not an exaggerated title. It's about the mental level at which this training takes place. Without rap as a form of expression, I wouldn't know how to get along. "

- Albino via the album title

Albino worked with several producers (12 Finger Dan, B-Base and DJ Mike), the number of guest contributions from other rappers was also very high. In each case, it was about “grown relationships that have become friendships” .

Albino himself acted "in the recordings as Producer Executive " in the Hitbäckerei Bielefeld , in the violin Chamber Hamburg , in Heidelberg Piedmont Studio and in Larica Studio in Berlin took place. Albino was able to win Holger Burner, Chaoze One , Nesti , Ole, Madcap, Tokin One, KET and Callya as guest rapper .

promotion

A trailer was released for the release of the album, for which Christian Helbig was responsible for the direction and production. About a year after the album was released, a video was made for the piece Open End , directed by Lars Lehner.

layout

The album cover, which is held in a white frame, shows Albino in a shabby room with glasses, black T-shirt and crossed arms. To the right - from the viewer - behind him stands 12 fingers Dan, whose hands are on Albino's shoulders, and a white towel hangs over his left hand. In the right background DJ Mike can be seen with a record in one left hand and his right hand on his chin with a thoughtful gesture.

The relatively simple booklet contains black and white photos of the rapper, the producers and the guest rappers. All photos are from Ralph Pache, Barbara Sander was responsible for the cover.

Texts

albino

Stylistically, survival training , like all previous albums by the artist, can be assigned to Conscious Rap . The album begins, like the debut album Covered up & veiled , with an excerpt from a speech by Rudi Dutschke , whom Albino regards as a role model. This was also accompanied by a beat. In Therefore , a duet with Holger Burner, several grievances on earth are denounced. Above all, politicians are accused of double standards and the media of manipulation, whereby the latter are largely synchronized and a lot is kept silent. Inexplicable deals with animal rights , whereby the text criticizes the indifference of many people towards the handling of animals.

88 is great , on which Albino raps with Madcap and Tokin One, is about right-wing extremism . The 88 is said to stand for hip-hop in this context , alluding to the fact that H is the eighth letter of the alphabet. The claim is made not to leave the power of definition over symbols to the Nazis, since eighty-eight often represents a kind of abbreviation for " Heil Hitler " within the right-wing scene . The piece also forms the core of an album of the same name that Albino released together with Madcap two years later and in which the subject of right-wing extremism occupies a large space. On this the song was published again.

On the other hand, some pieces deal with self-reflection , such as Correspondence , Alone and The Calm Before the Storm . The former was created together with the Karlsruhe rapper Chaoze One and does not represent an exchange of letters in the actual sense, rather the title is to be interpreted metaphorically. It deals with things that both concerned them at the time. Originally, the piece was supposed to contain a few additional stanzas before both rappers decided to write a new piece later instead.

reception

Survival training received mostly positive reviews. rap.de characterized it as a "very round and successful album" . Albino is also praised in this review for defying the zeitgeist of that time within the hip-hop scene: “And now the question is why such an album cannot finally claim validity again in 2007. It sounds like old school reissued. And if you feel like going back to the good old school, why should you only listen to old records? This disc is then exactly the right one. " The rap technique is only criticized in places with " stresses on actually unstressed syllables " , which seem" a bit convulsive and strange " .
