Adolf Willi Sauter (born April 2, 1911 in Basel ; † February 24, 1961 in Heilbronn ) was a German graphic artist who mainly worked in Heilbronn.

Life

Sauter's father was Alsatian , his mother from Heilbronn. As a child he came to Heilbronn. He began his art studies at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart with Ernst Schneidler and later switched to the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe to study with Karl Hubbuch . He worked as a shop window designer and as a designer for packaging, business papers and trademarks. In the 1930s he won two first prizes for shop window designs for Heilbronn shops: in 1935 in the shop window competition of the Reichsarbeitsgemeinschaft für Deutsche Buchwerbung for the Rudi Kienzle bookstore, and in 1937 in the shop window competition as part of the Reichswerbewochen for the German pharmacy for the Safe'sche Pharmacy . In 1938, the magazine Nutzgraphik - International Advertising Art praised his “unusually economical scenic effort” and described his work as “not only graphically, but also psychologically exemplary”.

Heilbronn coat of arms designed by Sauter

Sauter created graphic works and designed many shop window decorations. In 1940 he designed the advertisement for the Heilbronn pastry shop Noller. In 1949 he designed the graphic of the Heilbronn city arms, which is still used today, based on a design by the Stuttgart heraldist Alfred Danzigmann . His ink drawing Field Flowers (1949) (69.5 × 49.5 cm) is in the Städtische Museen Heilbronn . During the reconstruction of the Safe'schen Apotheke, which was destroyed in World War II, he designed the interior in 1950.

The graphic works he produced include printed matter for the Heilbronn artists' association (exhibition poster 1953, invitation card for the artists' festival 1957), and he also designed the rooms for the artists' festival in 1957. He designed an advertising brochure for the Small Theater in Heilbronn. He designed the advertising font for Harmonie , Heilbronn's parlor , the menu for the Insel Hotel and printed matter for the Wilhelm Pfau envelope factory. In 1952 he designed the illustrated book Das Neckartal und seine Industrie , published by DuMont-Verlag , in 1953 a commemorative publication for the 100th anniversary of the Heilbronn gasworks and an advertising leaflet for the municipal traffic office and the tourist association; In 1956 he was commissioned to design a poster for the 800th anniversary of the city of Schwäbisch Hall . He also provided illustrations for books by the Heilbronner Salzer-Verlag such as Paradies an der Memel (Susanne von Baibus, 1956), Das Gefangene Buch (Arthur Ignatius, 1956) and Christ appears on the Congo (Peter Sulzer, 1958).
