The road branches off from the A40 road in Haverfordwest and initially leads in a west-northwest direction to St Davids ( Tyddewi in Welsh ). There it turns sharply to the northeast and runs some distance from the coast to the ferry terminal of Fishguard ( Welsh Abergwaun ). From there it continues, now as the primary route, to Eglwyswrw and turns north-east. It continues on to Cardigan ( Aberteifi in Welsh ), where the A478 road and A484 road meet, and on to Aberaeron , where it reaches the coast. The next bigger town is Aberystwyth . There it meets the A44 road coming from the east . The A487 moves away from the coast here and crosses the River Dyfi in Machynlleth . It continues in a northerly direction through the Cambrian Mountains to Dolgellau , before which it joins the A470 road . The further route north through the Snowdonia National Park is also shared with the A470, with which it passes Lake Lyn Trawsfynydd, but separates again in Gellilydan . The A487 continues west to Porhmadog , then initially swings to the northwest, cutting off the Lleyn Peninsula , later to the north and finally reaching Caernarfon on Menaistraße (bypass road under construction in 2019). She follows this, crosses the A55 road , where the character ends as a primary route, and after a short distance reaches Bangor . There it ends on the A5 road .
