The ATS Kulmbach 1861 club ( General Gymnastics and Sports Club Kulmbach 1861 eV ) is one of the oldest and largest general gymnastics and sports clubs in Bavaria .

History of the club

The ATS was founded as a gymnastics club in 1861 on March 23, 1861, shortly after the lifting of the gymnastics ban in Kulmbach, based on the ideals of gymnastics father Friedrich Ludwig Jahn . The city magistrate made the space behind the bird's pole available to the association free of charge, and the Schützengarten was used a short time later . The flag consecration took place in 1862 on the Kulmbach market square.

In 1865 there were already 80 active members. Several relocations of the gym and pub took place. The board of directors, Conrad Vorteilel, made a name for himself by leading the association for 35 years from 1876. On August 11, 1878, the 100th birthday of the gymnastics father Jahn was celebrated as part of a big city festival.

In 1886, for the 25th anniversary of the association, a fund was set up to build its own hall, which was completed on September 25, 1893 and handed over to the association. In 1895, the fencing department was established as the first additional sport.

Even then, the ATS was an organizer of national events, such as B. In 1894 the North Bavarian District Gymnastics Festival and in 1897 the second gymnastics festival of the Academic Gymnastics Association with over 600 students.

In 1907 the gymnastics club took over the sponsorship of the friendly gymnastics association Kulmbach and merged with this in 1931 to form the Kulmbach gymnastics association . In 1934 several thousand participants were counted for the 10th Gymnastics Festival of the Academic Gymnastics Association, the club already had over 700 members in 1936.

After the Second World War , the association was re-established on March 3, 1946 under the name ATS Kulmbach and continued its old traditions. In 1971, the company's 110th anniversary was celebrated when the then Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt appeared as the guest of honor . In the years that followed, the ATS was allowed to host numerous major events, for example the Bavarian Youth Meeting in 1974 and the Gauturn Festival in 1983, each with well over 1,000 participants.

After the football department was added in 1911, the club was expanded by six departments in the 1920s, and ten more were added after the Second World War. Today the club has 19 departments with over 2,000 members and represents a supraregional focus in the Bavarian sports landscape.

Soccer

At their most successful time, the footballers of the ATS Kulmbach played from 1951 to 1958, 1960 to 1963 and 1974 to 1982 in the then third-rate Bayernliga or Bayernliga Nord (from 1953 to 1963 the Bayernliga was divided into a northern and a southern relay). In 1953 they even became Bayern league champions, but failed in the subsequent round of promotion to Division II . After the 2nd place in 1977 the ATS Kulmbach was allowed to take part in the German amateur championship and reached the semi-finals. The only main round participation in the DFB Cup ended in 1976 in the first round with a 2: 4 in the Sportfreunde Siegen .

In 2004, the first team was withdrawn from play for financial reasons (at that time in the Upper Franconian regional league) and had to start over twice (after a one-year break) in the lowest division.

While the ice hockey teams at the clubs EC Kulmbach and EHC Kulmbach later took part in the BEV's game operations , the ATS again reported a team for the [Ice Hockey District League Bayern | District League] and took part in the Ice Hockey District League Bayern North in the 2011/12 season last place. For the continuation of game operations in the 2012/13 season, the ATS, together with EHC Bayreuth 1b, reported a syndicate for the District League North, which was dissolved for the 2013/14 season and led to the ice sports department not continuing to participate in the league game operations.
