Aad van der Vaart (born July 12, 1959 in Vlaardingen ) is a Dutch mathematician and stochastic. He is Professor of Stochastics at the University of Leiden .

Aad van der Vaart studied mathematics, philosophy and psychology at the University of Leiden and received his doctorate there in 1987 under Willem Rutger van Zwet in mathematics (Statistical Estimation in Large Parameter Spaces). He researched and taught at Texas A&M University in College Station in Texas and in Paris and was a long professor at the Free University of Amsterdam , where he headed the mathematics faculty from 2002 to 2006. He has been a professor in Leiden since 2012.

He was visiting professor at Berkeley , Harvard and the University of Washington in Seattle . He heads the Mathematics Department at the Lorentz Center, heads the European Council of the Bernoulli Society, is Scientific Director of the Stieltjes Institute and is on the Council of the International Statistical Institute .

He dealt with infinite-dimensional statistical models and very high-dimensional models. He developed an asymptotic theory of statistical estimates for infinite dimensional models and Bayesian procedures for infinite dimensional models. He dealt with the applications of statistical methods in cancer research and diagnostics, statistical genetics, historical demographics and analysis of computed tomographic data.

In 2015 he received the Spinoza Prize and in 2012 an ERC Advanced Grant. In 2003 he received the van Dantzig Prize . He is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences . In 2010 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Hyderabad ( Bayesian Regularization ).

He was Associate Editor of Annals of Statistics , Statistica Neerlandica , Annales de l'Institut Henri Poincare , Probability Theory and Related Fields , Statistics and Decisions, and is Associate Editor of Indagationes Mathematicae , Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference, and ALEA . From 2003 to 2007 he was President of the Nederlands Society for Statistics and Operations Research.
