Aaron Wyner

Aaron D. Wyner (born March 17, 1939 in the Bronx , New York , † September 29, 1997 in Morristown ) was an American information theorist .

Wyner graduated from the Bronx High School of Science (completion 1955), at Queens College of the City University of New York ( Bachelor Accounts in mathematics and physics in 1960) and the Columbia University a bachelor's degree earned in electrical engineering, where he in 1960 and 1963 in electrical engineering. The subject of the dissertation was the algebraic theory of convolutional codes. He was then briefly an assistant professor at Columbia University before moving to Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill in 1963 , where he headed the communications analysis research department from 1974 (as the successor to Stephen O. Rice). From 1993 he was in the information theory department and he became a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff .

In 1969/70 he received a Guggenheim scholarship at the Weizmann Institute and the Technion . He also taught part-time at Columbia University, Princeton University, and the Brooklyn Polytechnic.

He dealt with coding theory (channel coding under white noise, algebraic coding, multi-user coding), optical message processing, cryptography, data compression (analysis of the Ziv-Lempel algorithm), cellular networks and stochastic processes. In cryptography, his model of the wire-tap channel (Bell System Technical Journal 1975) became known, that is, intercepted communication channels. He showed that with a main channel with a sufficiently large capacity compared to the eavesdropping channel, it is possible to transmit messages to the legitimate recipient that remain secret from the listener because they are hidden in the noise.

Wyner was a member of the National Academy of Engineering (1994) and an IEEE Fellow . He received the Claude E. Shannon Award . In 1976 he was President of the IEEE Information Theory Society and editor of the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory.

With Neil Sloane he edited the Collected Papers of Claude Shannon (IEEE Press 1993).
