Abov (German historically Abaujwar / (Abau-) Neuburg , currently only briefly Abau , Hungarian Abaúj , Latin comitatus Abaujvariensis ) is the name of a landscape in Slovakia and also the name of a historic administrative unit ( County / County ) in the Kingdom of Hungary .

About half of the area is located in present-day eastern Slovakia and north-eastern Hungary , the Slovak name Abov is now used as an unofficial name for this area.

Location (1882)

The county, which existed in this form until 1882, bordered Sáros ( Šariš ) county in the north , Semplin county in the east and south , Borsod county in the southwest , Torna county in the west and Zips county in the north-west .

The area stretched about 20 kilometers on both sides of the Hernad / Kundert River ( Hornád in Slovak , Hernád in Hungarian ) between Košice ( Kaschau in German , Kassa in Hungarian ) and Miskolc (in Slovak Miškovec ; no longer belonging).

Administrative headquarters

Originally the administrative seat of the county was in Forró , after that the administrative seat changed many times, from the late 16th century the administrative seat was in Gönc and from the middle of the 17th century in Košice.

The county emerged in the second half of the 13th century from the comitatus Novi Castri (named after the Abaújvár castle , Latin Novum Castrum ; located near the village of Abaújvár ), which also included the Sharosh and Hewesch counties that were later created from it and its seat in the castle Novum Castrum had.

Since 1882 (temporarily already 1785-1790 and 1848-1859), the County was then by the western county Tornau for County Abaujwar-Tornau combined.
