Abdelkader Benali (born November 25, 1975 in Ighazzazen , Morocco ) is a Dutch writer .

Life

Benali spent the first four years of his childhood in Morocco before he followed his father to the Netherlands with his mother. He worked as a butcher in Rotterdam . The family moved several times within Rotterdam. The family later moved to Amsterdam . He learned and speaks the Berber language as well as the Dutch language in his family . He began to write pieces in Dutch at a very early age and thus took part in various competitions. He won the Kunstbende Prize and the Arabic Arts Center El Hizjra Prize, among others . He also won first prize from the University of Leiden for an essay entitled Vernieuwing als traditie , which enabled him to study for one year free of charge at the University of Leiden. There he studied history.

Benali not only writes novels , plays, and essays , but also articles and reviews for various newspapers . He writes in Switzerland for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung and in the Netherlands for the Algemeen Dagblad , De Groene Amsterdammer , Esquire , de Volkskrant and Vrij Nederland . At the age of 21 his debut novel Hochzeit am Meer appeared (Dutch original title: Bruiloft aan zee ), which was nominated for the Libris Literature Prize. However, he only received this award in 2003 for his second novel De langverwachte . Also in the 2003 competition for this award was the Gstaad 95-98 work by Marek van der Jagt alias Arnon Grunberg . Like Grunberg , Abdelkader Benali has also admitted to having written two works under a pseudonym , but these are not yet known.

In 2006 he was in Lebanon . There he was surprised by the outbreak of the Israeli-Lebanese war . He documented his impressions as a witness of this conflict in a weblog for the newspaper Vrij Nederland .
