Adventure Land is a strategic fantasy board game by the German game authors Wolfgang Kramer and Michael Kiesling , in which the players and their heroes have to fight evil foggy creatures in a kingdom. The game was published in October 2015 by the German publisher HABA , which also markets it internationally. In 2016 it was awarded the Austrian Games Prize in the category “Hit games for families” and the Dutch Games Prize.

Theme and equipment

In Adventure Land is a strategic board game with a fantasy theme. In the role of adventurer, players have to free a kingdom from the aggressive fog creatures that rise from the fog of the swamps. In doing so, they collect weapons, herbs and companions on the game board that support them in battle and earn victory points. In its basic version, the game describes three game scenarios with the same basic gameplay and slightly different objectives and ratings.

In addition to the instructions, the game material consists of:

  • a game plan with a map on a 10x10 grid (AK, 1-10), on which are the different regions (mountains, forests, cloud valleys, towns and a river) displayed, and a Kramer bar for the points classification,
  • 40 adventures, 10 each in the four player colors,
  • four scoring stones in the four player colors,
  • 30 companions (white figures),
  • an aquarius,
  • 110 travel cards,
  • 28 sword tiles,
  • 20 herb tokens,
  • 18 gold plates,
  • 14 fog creatures,
  • three dice D6, and
  • three overview maps for the individual scenarios.

Style of play

Game preparation

To prepare for the game, a scenario is first selected and the game board is laid out in the middle of the table, each player also chooses a player color and receives all adventurers and the scoring marker of his color. The scoring marker is placed on the starting field of the scoring track, one adventurer of each color is placed on the starting areas next to rows 1 to 4 and above columns from A to D (if there are only two players, also in front of row 5 and above column E). The overview card for the relevant scenario as well as all tiles, companions, the Aquarius and the dice are placed next to the game board.

Finally, the deck of cards is shuffled with the 110 terrain cards and placed next to the board as a draw pile. The first eight cards are turned up one after the other and, according to the information, a corresponding tile (swords, herbs or gold) or a companion is placed on the indicated field. If a gold plate is laid down, the Aquarius is placed on it. If a tile with fog monsters is discarded, another card is revealed and executed.

Game flow

Beginning with a starting player, the other players always play in turn and carry out two actions per turn: They reveal and execute two terrain cards and then move their adventurers.

Actions per turn
  • Reveal and execute 2 cards
  • move up to 2 adventurers
    • if necessary, pick up platelets
    • if necessary fight with a fog creature

The uncovering of the terrain cards corresponds to the procedure that was described in the preparation for the game: For each card a tile or a companion is placed on the indicated space on the playing field grid. If it is a piece of gold, the Aquarius moves on the river from his current position to the new gold tile, whereby all adventurers and companions in the river who are on this path are eliminated from the game. If it is a fog creature tile, an additional card is drawn after each display.

In the second phase of the turn the player draws his adventurers. He may only move these to the south or east, which means that the pieces move from the upper left corner to the lower right corner. The player may move as far as he likes in one direction twice with one figure or once with two figures, skipping other figures with the exception of Aquarius and all tiles with the exception of the fog creatures. If an adventurer moves to a space with a tile (swords, herbs or gold), he takes it and places it in front of him. If he lands on a field with a companion, he will join him in the next few turns and accompany him. An adventurer can have any number of companions. The player may also land on an empty space or forego his move, but he may never land with another adventurer or on the space with the Aquarius. If in the following round a card is revealed from a space on which an adventurer is standing, he receives the corresponding tile or the companion.

Calculation of combat strength
  • Adventurer: 1 point
  • Companion: 1 point each
  • Sword plate:
    • 1 die per tile
    • Sword bonus
  • Herbal Bonuses
  • Gold bonus
    • 1 point per gold plate, or
    • One new die roll for each gold tile

If the player lands on a fog tile, his turn ends there and he has to fight the creature. To fight the creature, he must have at least the combat strength that corresponds to the strength of the fog creature. The adventurer's fighting strength is added up from the number of figures (adventurers and companions) and the use of swords, herbs and gold. The player can use up to three sword tiles from his possession and receives a corresponding number of dice, the result of which is added to the combat strength together with the additional values on the sword tiles. If this sum is not enough, the player can also place herbal tiles with their strength and also use gold to increase the combat strength by one point or to reroll a die. If the player has defeated the fog creature, he receives the tile and places it in front of him. If the player loses the battle, the adventurers and companions are removed from the game. In all cases, used sword, herb and gold tiles must be removed from the game.

Playing

The game ends after the round in which all swords and companions are used up and are on the board. In a game with 3 or 4 players, there are only 25 or 28 companions and 23 or 26 sword tiles in play. If one of the two resources is empty, tiles or companions are taken from the supply in the following rounds until the second resource is also empty.

The rating at the end of the game depends on the scenario chosen:

  • In the Adventure 1 scenario : The companions are awarded points during the game. For defeated fog creatures the players receive the number of points indicated on the tiles, for connected companions per adventurer +1, +2, ... + n points in ascending order and 1 point for each gold piece collected. These points are settled directly and remain in place even if the players lose their companions and the gold again.
  • In the Adventure 2 scenario : The Glorious , adventurers of the same color and their companions are allowed to stand together on fields and thus form larger groups that move together. In the scoring, at the end of the game the players get points for the defeated fog creatures according to their fighting strength. For the largest group, the players also receive the number of participating adventurers plus companions multiplied by three, as well as 2 victory points for each gold tile and points for each sword and herb tile according to the values printed on them.
  • In the Adventure 3 scenario : Escape to the cities , the players try to draw all of their adventurers to the cities in order to avoid negative points. In the scoring, at the end of the game the players get points for the defeated fog creatures according to their scores. The player with the most fog creature tiles receives an additional 7, the second 3 and the third one victory point. For each gold tile the players get 2 victory points and the player with the most gold tiles receives an additional 7, the second 3 and the third one one victory point. In addition, the adventurers in the cities per city are awarded additional points. The player who has the most adventurers and companions in a city receives the number of city spaces as points, the second half and the third half of the second, rounded down. For adventurers who are not in the cities at the end of the game, the player receives minus points equal to the number of corresponding adventurers and companions multiplied by the number of fog creature tiles still on the game board.

The winner of the game is the player who has the most victory points at the end of the game and is therefore furthest ahead on the scoring track.

Development and reception

The game Abenteuerland was developed by the German game authors Wolfgang Kramer and Michael Kiesling and was published by the German publisher HABA for the International Game Days 2015 in Essen as a multilingual game in six language versions (German, English, Italian, Spanish, French and Dutch).

In 2016 the game was awarded the Austrian Games Prize in the category “Hit games for families” and the Dutch Games Prize.

A promo was printed on the family game catalog from HABA 2015 that can be used in the game. There were four new tiles: the gold sword and the platinum sword, with which the player may use two or three dice each, the magic gold herbs with an additional combat strength of 5 and the loyal wolf (as herb tiles) with a combat strength of 2, which does not have to be removed from the game. In 2016, King and Princess, an expansion to the game with three new scenarios and additional game material, appeared.
