Abraham Bedros I. Ardzivian , also Abraham Petrus II. Ardzivian, ( Armenian : Աբրահամ Պետրոս Ա. Արծիւեան; * 1679 in Aintab ; † October 1, 1749 in Kreim , today: Governorate Lebanonberg , Lebanon ) was the first patriarch of Cilicia to the Armenian Catholic Church . The Armenian Catholic Church regards him as its founder, although an independent Armenian Catholic patriarchate had not yet been established at the time.

Life

Abraham Ardzivian, disciple of the Catholic-minded Armenian Melkon Tazbazian, was ordained a priest in 1706 and in 1710 by the Armenian Apostolic Catholicos Peter II of Cilicia in Sis as bishop for the Archdiocese of Aleppo . As such, he openly advocated a union between the Armenian Church and the Pope in Rome, and suffered persecution and several years in prison. Finally he retired to Kreim (Lebanon) for 17 years in 1722. Between 1735 and 1736, his followers acquired the Mar Georges Avkar Monastery (Lebanon) and followed the rules of the Maronite Antonites. In 1738 the Armenian Catholics in Aleppo received their own church and obtained permission for Ardzivian to return to his bishopric. In 1740 he consecrated three of his followers in Aleppo, including Hagop Bedros II. Hovsepian , as bishops and was elected (counter) Catholicos of Cilicia .

His ordination took place on November 26, 1740 in Aleppo. In 1741/43 he stayed in Europe. On December 8, 1742 he received the pallium in Rome from the hands of Pope Benedict XIV and since then has been given the official name "Abraham Bedros (Peter)". On his return journey to the Orient, in the spring of 1743, he visited Mechitar von Sebasteia in the Mechitarist monastery on San Lazzaro near Venice, who was personally reserved about the establishment of a special Armenian Catholic hierarchy.

After a long stay in Alexandria (Egypt), the patriarch Abraham Bedros I. Ardzivian, who was not recognized by the Ottoman state, settled in Kreim (Lebanon). His successors moved the seat of the Armenian Catholic Patriarch to Bzommar . Their area of jurisdiction remained regionally limited, including not including the Catholic Armenians in Constantinople and the surrounding area.
