occupation

Her first husband , also known as Farewell to Waterloo Bridge (Original: Waterloo Bridge ), is an American drama directed by Mervyn LeRoy from 1940. It is a remake of the film of the same name from 1931 and, like this one, is based on the one at the time popular play The Waterloo bridge ( Waterloo bridge ) by Robert E. Sherwood .

action

Just before the start of World War II , British officer Roy Cronin returns to Waterloo Bridge in London . There he remembers the time of the First World War and the young ballet dancer Myra, whom he met before he moved to the front. After they got closer then and missed a performance because of him, she was expelled from her ballet group. From then on she lived on the streets of London and fell even deeper when she learned that Roy had died on the battlefield. But in reality, Roy was still alive. When he finds Myra after the war and he and his family learn of their past as a prostitute, she throws herself in desperation on the Waterloo Bridge in front of an ambulance and dies. Years later, Roy stands on the bridge and he realizes that he lost his great love there.

background

Vivien Leigh and Robert Taylor played the main roles in this remake . It was Leigh's first film after her great success with Gone with the Wind ( Gone With the Wind , 1939).

The black and white film produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer proved to be very successful at the box office and received two Oscar nominations in the categories of best film music and best camera .

Both Taylor and Leigh named Waterloo Bridge their favorite movie.

criticism

"Pseudo-tragic and mendacious, but carefully staged and impressively played."
