Acámbaro is a city with 57,972 inhabitants (as of 2010) and the administrative seat of the Municipio Acámbaro in the southeast of the Mexican state Guanajuato .
Acámbaro is located on the Río Lerma in the southern part of the Mesa Central highlands at an altitude of 1947 m . A Spanish settlement was founded there in 1526 on the site of a small Purépecha village.
With the construction of the Presa Solís reservoir , the surrounding land could be irrigated and cultivated . Corn , beans , wheat and chickpeas are the most important crops. Also of importance is the cattle - sheep - and pig farming .
Acámbaro is a major rail and road junction 70 km south of Celaya and 277 km northwest of Mexico City .
