Achim Mumme (born December 5, 1958 in Hildesheim ) is a German vascular surgeon and adjunct professor at the University of Bochum . Mumme is Director of the Clinic for Vascular Surgery and Senior Physician at the interdisciplinary Vein Center of the Catholic Clinic of the Ruhr University in Bochum .

Life

Mumme studied human medicine at the Hannover Medical School . There he received his doctorate in 1989 with magna cum laude. He completed his training as a specialist in surgery at the Clinic for Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at St.-Johannes-Hospital Dortmund (1986 to 1988) and at the Surgical Clinic of the Ruhr University Bochum (1988 to 1992). In 1994 Mumme received the additional focus on vascular surgery and, as a senior physician, took over the technical management of vascular surgery at the St. Josef Hospital in Bochum. Mumme completed his habilitation in 1998 with the subject of clinical and experimental studies on the intraoperative fibrinolysis treatment of therapy-refractory deep vein thrombosis . From 1999 to 2005 he was the head physician in the Department of Vascular Surgery at St. Josef Hospital - the Ruhr University in Bochum. In 2002 he acquired the additional qualification in phlebology . In 2004 he was appointed adjunct professor.

Mumme has been Director of the Clinic for Vascular Surgery since 2005 and, since 2007, Senior Physician at the Interdisciplinary Vein Center of the Dermatological and Vascular Surgery Clinic at the Catholic Clinic in Bochum.

Scientific contribution

Mumme's initial scientific activity focused on the development of methods for isolated organ perfusion using the procedure of regional hyperthermic fibrinolytic perfusion. The method was initially used for the intraoperative fibrinolysis treatment of refractory arterial thromboses and later also for the fibrinolysis treatment of venous thromboses. In laboratory tests, Mumme described the temperature dependence of fibrinolysis with streptokinase and with recombinant tissue-specific plasminogen activator (rt-PA) . Since 1997 he has been working with minimally invasive methods in aortic surgery. He was involved in the development of laparoscopic surgical methods for the treatment of arterial occlusive disease. From 2003 to 2006, studies to determine the age of venous thromboses with the method of elastography followed . Since 2002 Mumme has been researching recurrences in varicose veins . The German inguinal recurrence - multicenter study was initiated by Mumme. In 2004, in collaboration with Bruno Geier, recanalizing therapy for chronic pelvic vein occlusions was established in Germany. In addition, the restorative treatment of venous valve insufficiency has been a long-term research focus. The procedure of extraluminal valvuloplasty of the great saphenous vein has been evaluated in several long-term studies. In addition to research, Mumme also made contributions to scientific research as a reviewer and as a member of the scientific advisory board of various specialist journals. Among other things, Mumme was together with M. Stücker Congress President at the 50th annual meeting of the German Society for Phlebology.

Memberships in scientific associations

Mumme has been a board member since 2009 and vice president of the German Society for Phlebology since 2012 . He is also a member of the editorial board of the journal Vascular Surgery and Phlebology and a member of the scientific advisory board of the journal Vasomed.
