Achnatherum bromoides , also known as Kurzgranniges awl grass in German, is a species of the genus Achnatherum in the sweet grass family(Poaceae).

features

The short-awned awl grass ( Achnatherum bromoides ) is a perennial plant that reaches heights of 1 meter. The species is glabrous and has a creeping rhizome . The ligula is inconspicuous. The leaf tips are gray-green, rolled and thread-like, their upper side is rough. The panicle is elongated, reaches up to 30 centimeters and has only a few spikelets . The glumes are more or less the same, white-green, lanceolate and three-veined. The lemma is hairy and 6 to 8 millimeters long. The awn is rough, straight, not twisted and 12 to 18 millimeters long.

The flowering period extends from May to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18 or 24. It is also called the number 2n = 28.

Occurrence

Achnatherum bromoides occurs from Hungary and the Mediterranean area to Iran. The species grows in open bushes, maquis and on rocky sites. It is missing in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In South Tyrol it was found on limestone rocks near Mezzocorona , but has been lost there. It occurs on Lake Garda between Malcesine and Torbole , and also near Bolzano . It is rare in Slovenia. In Trieste she has her northernmost occurrence in the Adriatic area.

Systematics

The species was first described by Linnaeus in 1767 as Agrostis bromoides L. It is now known as Achnatherum bromoides (L.) P. Beauv. placed in the genus Achnatherum .
