history

St. Peter and Paul in Achsheim

The area was already densely populated in the Bronze and Urnfield Ages. The climatically protected location in the lee of the low mountain range, the natural resources and the fertile river valley favored the settlement. Numerous archaeological monuments document the settlement up to the Roman Empire; however, with its decline it ended temporarily. There are no find horizons from the troubled times of the Great Migration , these only started again in the Carolingian period in the 8th century. Achsheim is mentioned in a document in the 12th century as Aseheim . Achsheim and Eggelhof belonged to the manor of the cathedral monastery Augsburg . A memorial from 1632 commemorates atrocities from the Thirty Years' War , which, like the Schmutter, is included in the local coat of arms.

The Catholic Peter and Paul Church in Achsheim, which is essentially late Gothic, belongs to the diocese of Augsburg . Around 1680 it was enlarged to include the choir and sacristy, and around 1750 it was expanded to its present appearance. It is also a listed building, as is the small Lourdes Chapel from the 19th century at the southern exit of the town. Around 1800 Achsheim was a typical street village with around 40 farmsteads along the trade route between the ridge and the Schmutter. There was a bridge and a mill there, and a brick factory 700 meters to the west.

Achsheim was an independent municipality with its Eggelhof district and was incorporated into the municipality of Langweid am Lech on July 1, 1972 as part of the regional reform in Bavaria . At that time the place had about 500 inhabitants.
