August Kirsimägi
August Kirsimägi , up to the estonization of his name Adalbert August Kirschenberg (born September 21, 1905 in Vahi , Tartumaa , † August 29, 1933 in Tallinn ), was an Estonian writer .
life and work
Adalbert Kirschberg graduated in 1925 the Hugo Treffner Gymnasium in Tartu . He then studied law at the University of Tartu .
Kirsimägi caused a sensation and almost mystical fame especially with his first novel Puhastustuli (German purgatory ). In it he describes the exuberant life of the Tartuer Corps student Ilmar Mõtsalind with numerous carousing parties and erotic love affairs. Kirsimägi himself was an active member of the Sakala Corporation at the University of Tartu . In the novel, the newspaper competition Loodus he received in 1929 for Puhastustuli first prize. Kirsimägi himself had written the work during a stay in Paris as a bohemian .
In addition to his hit novel , Kirsimägi published the romance novel Preestri tütar and some short stories.
In 1933, out of jealousy, Kirsimägi burned the manuscript of his new novel and traveled to Tallinn with a revolver in his pocket. There he shot his rival and his lover. He then turned the gun on himself.
August Kirsimägi is also known for what was probably the first stunt in Estonian film history. For the feature film Esimese öö õigus (1925, director: Balduin Kusbock ) he jumped from the Tartu stone bridge into the Emajõgi river .
