Adam Stefan Śmigielski SDB (born December 24, 1933 in Przemyśl , Lviv Voivodeship (now Subcarpathian Voivodeship ), Poland ; †  October 7, 2008 in Sosnowiec , Silesian Voivodeship ) was Bishop of Sosnowiec.

Life

Adam Śmigielski entered the seminary of the Salesians of Don Bosco in Krakow at the age of 18 . From 1951 to 1953 he studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Krakow and Los Angeles . In 1955 he made his profession and completed postgraduate studies in philosophy and theology in Krakow, Lublin and Warsaw . He was ordained a priest on June 30, 1957 by the Bishop of Lublin Piotr Kalwa . In 1979 he received his doctorate from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and Jerusalem . From 1975 to 1981 he was the reign of the Salesian Seminary in Cracow. From 1982 to 1986 he was the director of the Don Bosco House in Auschwitz . From 1986 to 1992 he was head of the order in Wroclaw . Pope John Paul II appointed him the first bishop of the Sosnowiec diocese, founded in 1992 by the Apostolic Constitution Totus Tuus Poloniae Populus, in 1992 . He was ordained bishop on May 30, 1992 by Cardinal Józef Glemp , Archbishop of Gniezno; Co-consecrators were the Archbishop of Kraków Franciszek Cardinal Macharski and Stanisław Nowak , Archbishop of Częstochowa. His motto was Da mihi animas cetera great ("Give me souls, take everything else!") - the motto of his order. He received honorary citizenship of the cities of Sosnowiec (2007), Jaworzno (2007), Będzin (2008) and Czeladź (2008). He suffered from pancreatic cancer and died at the age of 74 in St. Barbara Hospital in Sosnowiec.
