Allendorf was born on October 9, 1845 as the son of master shoemaker Lorenz Allendorf and his wife Maria (née Reifert) in Mainz. At the age of 14 he began an apprenticeship as a painter and plasterer and later practiced the profession. As a teenager, he joined the Mainz gymnastics club from 1817 in 1861 , and became its chairman in later years.

In 1874 Allendorf founded the hiking and beautification club Lennebergverein , of which he was chairman for decades. At his suggestion, a stone observation tower was built in the Lenneberg Forest between Mainz and Budenheim from 1878 , which was inaugurated as the Lenneberg Tower in 1880.

In the Mainz district of Gonsenheim there is an Adam-Allendorf-Weg that is named after him.
