Adam Johnson emerged from the youth division of Middlesbrough FC . With this he won the FA Youth Cup in 2004 . This was also the first junior cup win in the club's history. In addition to Johnson, men's teammates such as David Wheater and Andrew Taylor were later on the team . For the 2004/05 season, the winger moved into the club's professional squad. Although he did not appear in a league or a domestic cup during this time, he was allowed to celebrate his international debut in the UEFA Cup on March 17, 2005 under coach Steve McClaren . In the away game against Sporting Lisbon Johnsen came on in the 78th minute for the Brazilian Doriva . Six months later, the then young player came to his league premiere. In the 2-1 home win, he replaced the injured Stewart Downing . In the period that followed, he only came across a few missions. On May 3, 2006 he succeeded his first goal for Boro against the Bolton Wanderers . On June 30 of the same year, the midfielder extended his contract for four years. Shortly thereafter, Johnson was loaned out to Leeds United for a month. After his return, more periods of use followed, but without finally convincing. In September 2007 he was therefore awarded for three months at Watford FC , where he rose to the top of the second division team . Upon his return, Johnson made the breakthrough at Middlesbrough. But even he could not avoid relegation to the Football League Championship. There the offensive player scored eleven goals in 24 games. This performance did not go unnoticed by the top English teams, so he moved to Manchester City in February 2010 . At the Citizens , Johnson prevailed despite great competition and moved into the national team's field of vision.

For the 2012/13 season Johnson moved within the league to AFC Sunderland . He signed a four-year contract in Sunderland until June 30, 2016. However, the club prematurely terminated the contract in February 2016 after Johnson's affair with a minor had become known. In March 2016, a court sentenced Johnson to six years in prison for having a sexual relationship with a minor. He has to undergo psychotherapy and is registered as a sex offender for life. In April 2016, it was announced that Johnson had appealed the ruling.
