description

Vegetative characteristics

Adansonia za are usually large, massive, 10 to 30 meters high deciduous trees with purple smooth bark . Fully grown leaves are palm-shaped with 3 to 7 partial leaves and are attached to petioles up to 12 centimeters long . The bald leaf blade is egg-shaped, 5 to 10 inches long and 1.5 to 2.5 inches wide. The leaf margin is entire.

Inflorescences and flowers

The individual flowers are upright. Their sepals are 10 to 20 inches long and 1.2 to 1.5 inches wide. The yellow, linear corolla is 15 to 20 centimeters long and 1.2 to 1.5 centimeters wide. The numerous stamens are fused into a 2 to 6 centimeter long tube with 2.5 to 6 centimeter long free tips.

The flowering period extends from November to February. It starts in the north earlier than in the south.

Fruits and seeds

The fruits that ripen at the end of the dry season are oblong or ovoid. They contain kidney-shaped, laterally flattened seeds .

The seeds have an oil content of 11 percent. The fatty acids are made up of 27 percent palmitic acid , 3 percent stearic acid , 30 percent oleic acid and 23 percent linoleic acid . There are also other rare fatty acids.

Systematics, number of chromosomes and distribution

Adansonia za is endemic in deciduous and thorn forests, the savannah and in the bushland of Andohahela in the southwest of Madagascar , over the west coast to the north ( Boina region and Sambirano River basin).

The first description was made in 1890 by Henri Ernest Baillon .

The chromosome number is .

Synonyms for the species are Adansonia za var. Za , Adansonia za var. Bozy Jum. & H. Perrier , Adansonia bozy (Jum. & H. Perrier) H. Perrier , Adansonia za var. Boinensis H. Perrier and Adansonia alba Jum. & H. Perrier .

use

Fruit pulp and seeds, as well as the roots of young seedlings, are eaten. The damp wood from freshly felled trees is fed to domestic cattle when there is a shortage. The tree trunk is occasionally hollowed out to store water in it. Bark fibers are used to make clothes and cordage . The flowers are used medicinally to treat a sore throat .

Danger

Adansonia za is classified as " Near Threatened (NT) " in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species .
