Adelheid von Savona , also Adelayda, Adelaydis, Adelasia (* 1072 , † April 18, 1118 in Patti ) was Countess and Regent of Sicily and Queen of Jerusalem .

Life

Adelheid was a daughter of Margrave Manfred von Savona . In 1089 she married Roger I , Count of Sicily . She was Roger's third wife. With him she had two sons, Simon (1093) and Roger (1095). According to the report of Gaufredus Malaterra , two sisters of Adelheid were betrothed to the sons of Rogers I from his previous marriage, Gaufredus and Jordanus. Since Gaufredus died of leprosy before reaching maturity , only Jordanus' marriage could be celebrated.

After the death of her husband in 1101, she exercised the rule first for Simon (until his death in 1105) and then for Roger, until the latter took over the rule as Roger II himself in 1112. A series of mostly Greek documents, in which she is called Adelasia, documented her successful government, in which she knew how to do justice to the various ethnic units. While Roger I did not have a permanent seat of government, Adelheid chose Palermo as his residence.

Adelheid then moved to Jerusalem , where she married Baldwin I , King of Jerusalem , in 1113 . After she was ostracized by this for domestic political reasons in 1117, she returned to Sicily, where she died in 1118. She is buried in the Cathedral of S. Bartolomeo in Patti .
