Adolf Bestelmeyer (born December 21, 1875 in Nuremberg , † November 21, 1957 in Heidelberg ; full name: Adolf Christoph Wilhelm Bestelmeyer ) was a German experimental physicist .

life and work

Bestelmeyer studied mathematics and physics at the Technical University of Berlin , the Technical University of Munich and the University of Munich . After completing his doctorate , he worked as an assistant at the University of Göttingen in 1904 . During the First World War he was active in torpedo research, and from 1917 to 1921 he was professor of physics at the University of Greifswald . Then he worked as a laboratory manager in various companies (e.g. Askania ), mainly in the field of torpedo construction, until the end of the Second World War .

Bestelmeyer played an important role in the dispute about the way in which the electromagnetic mass depends on the speed. In 1907 he doubted the informative value of Walter Kaufmann's measurements and advocated his own interpretation. Bestelmeyer used a speed filter , and this method was later used by Alfred Bucherer in further experiments. However, Bestelmeyer also disagreed with the way Bucherer's experiments were carried out. This led to a polemical dispute between these two researchers. It took years before the measurement problem could be solved in terms of the theory of relativity .

Bestelmeyer also became known for developing a magneto for torpedoes during the First World War , for which he was awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class. However, this invention could no longer be tested in the First World War.
