Adolf Hartmann

Adolf Hartmann (born January 18, 1900 in Munich ; † January 26, 1972 there ) was a German painter.

Life

Adolf Hartmann was the eldest of four sons of the teacher and painter Friedrich Richard Hartmann and his wife Gertraud Hartmann. The youngest of the four brothers was the composer Karl Amadeus Hartmann .

Adolf Hartmann first learned church painters in Donauwörth and then attended the municipal trade school in Munich. At the age of 18, he began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich on October 29, 1918 with Angelo Jank and continued this later at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin with Gustav Boese . From 1924 Hartmann worked as a freelance artist.

His exhibition activity began in 1919 when he took part in an exhibition in the Glaspalast in Munich , where he has also exhibited regularly since then. Numerous exhibitions followed in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Vienna and Cologne. From 1934 to 1946 Hartmann no longer took part in exhibitions, but dealt with drafts for textile design . Between 1941 and 1943 he worked in different studio rooms at Klosterstrasse 75 .

From 1948 to 1962 Adolf Hartmann was a professor at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin. In 1960, Adolf Hartmann was appointed to the Munich Academy of Fine Arts , where he was a full professor for painting (and graphics) from October 1, 1962 to 1970.

Hartmann was a member of numerous artists' associations, a. a. of the New Group , of which he was also temporarily president. In addition, he was on the board of the German Association of Artists from 1952 to 1961 and again in 1963 . Adolf Hartmann was a member of the Munich Secession and the jury-free as well as an honorary member of the Rhenish Secession .

Adolf Hartmann was married to the painter Babs Englaender . He died in 1972 and was buried in the Westfriedhof (Munich) .
