"Death and the Maiden" (1900)

Adolf Hering: "Death and the Maiden"

One of his most important works of art is the painting “Death and the Maiden” (1900), oil on canvas, size 149 cm × 78 cm. The artist's signature “Adolf Hering” is affixed to the lower right. The design study is on the back. The painting is still in its original frame, an old sticky note with the artist's address is attached to the stretcher. In 2002 the painting was bought by a private art collector for € 650 at auction. Its current location is not known.

A very interesting aspect of this painting is that death comes as a friend and lovingly takes the girl in his arms. His face is covered so as not to frighten the girl. The symbolism of this depiction suggests that the girl suffered from a long, painful illness and longed for death. The overall artistic expression of the work is both peaceful and immensely touching.

Hering masterfully captured the moment when the girl is no longer fully in life, but has not yet died either. This can be seen very well from the fact that the right leg, still with life energy, is standing straight and firmly on the ground, while the left leg, already bent and weak, only touches the earth with the tips of the toes. The scenario is impressively underlined by the dark clouds that inevitably push themselves in front of the white clouds in the sky. The falling flower, which slips from the girl's hands the moment death embraces her, also bears the clear symbolism of dying.

Death and the Maiden was also published as a printed postcard at that time and was a very popular motif of its time.
