Adolf Holtzmann
Adolf Holtzmann (born May 2, 1810 in Karlsruhe , † July 3, 1870 in Heidelberg ) was a German Germanist and Indologist .
Life
Adolf Holtzmann, brother of Karl Julius Holtzmann , studied theology in Halle and Berlin, but then turned to linguistics, going to Munich in 1832 with the support of the Baden government and to Paris in 1834.
Appointed educator of the Baden princes in 1837, he remained in this position for a number of years until he was appointed professor of the German and Indian languages at the University of Heidelberg in 1852. He died here on July 3, 1870.
After Adolf Holtzmann, Holtzmann's law (also: sharpening), a sound change in the Germanic languages that he described first, is named.
His nephew Adolf Holtzmann (1838–1914) also became an Indologist.
Publications
His work belongs to the field of oriental languages (Indian and Old Persian) as well as that of German language and literature. Among these are his translation of the Indian epic

- Contributions to the explanation of the Persian cuneiform inscriptions (Karlsruhe 1845, issue 1); the area of German grammar on a comparative language basis includes:
- About the umlaut (Karlsruhe 1843) and
- On the Ablaut (Karlsruhe 1844), the German literature, his edition of the Old High German translation of a treatise by Isidore (1836), his
- Studies on the Nibelungenlied (Stuttgart 1854), in which he successfully countered the prevailing view of Karl Lachmann , and what other than the polemic
- Kampf um der Nibelungen Hort (1855) its edition of the
- Nibelungenlied (1857) and the
- Klage (1859) and the school edition of the
- Nibelungenlieds (3rd edition 1874) followed, finally the edition of the
- Große Wolfdietrich (Heidelberg 1865).
His book Kelten und Germanen (Stuttgart 1855), in which he tried to prove the identity of both peoples, met with great opposition . His old German grammar (Leipzig 1870–75, vol. 1) remained unfinished.
Published after his death, edited by Alfred Holder : Germanic Antiquities with text, translation and explanation by Tacitus Germania (Leipzig 1873); his lectures on German Mythology (1874) and The Elder Edda , translated and explained (1875).
