Adolf Holtzmann the Younger

Adolf Holtzmann (born December 20, 1838 in Karlsruhe , † February 17, 1914 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German Indologist ( Sanskrit researcher ).

Adolf Holtzmann was a son of the Protestant clergyman Karl Julius Holtzmann , his brother Heinrich Holtzmann became a theologian. He studied in Heidelberg and Erlangen and worked as a grammar school teacher from 1867 to 1897. In 1885 he became associate professor at the University of Freiburg , in 1890 he was appointed honorary professor there, and in 1908 full honorary professor of Sanskrit and comparative linguistics.

Inspired by the example of his uncle, the Germanist and Indologist Adolf Holtzmann (1810–1870), he studied the Indian epic Mahabharata .
