Alfred Theophil Holder (born April 3, 1840 in Vienna , † January 12, 1916 in Karlsruhe ) was a German librarian , manuscript researcher and philologist.

Life

Alfred Holder, son of the miniature painter Gottlieb Holder (1806–1845), studied classical and Germanic philology in Bonn and Heidelberg from 1858 to 1862 . During his studies in 1860 he became a member of the Alemannia Bonn fraternity and later the Frankonia Heidelberg fraternity . After graduating, he went on a long trip to Paris to study library. He started teaching in 1863 and taught in Rastatt , the Netherlands and Ladenburg . From 1867 he worked at the Grand Ducal Badische Hof- und Landesbibliothek in Karlsruhe. There he became librarian in 1870, head librarian in 1904 and head of the manuscript department, and from 1911 until his death he was director of the library. In 1869 he received his doctorate from the University of Freiburg .

Holder's focus was on scientific rather than administrative tasks. As a philologist and palaeographer, he has made a special contribution to researching, indexing and editing manuscripts. Since 1906, the Badische Landesbibliothek has participated in the supra-regional lending system under his direction.

Holder combined the work of the manuscript librarian with the edition of ancient and medieval texts. His text editions are based on intensive studies of the history of transmission and in some cases new manuscript finds. He edited Horace (1869, with Otto Keller ) and the scholias of Pomponius Porphyrio zu Horace (1894), Tacitus ' Germania (1873, 1878), Caesars De bello Gallico (1882) and De bello civili (1898), Herodotus (1882) ), Avienus Carmina (1887). In the series Germanischer Bücherschatz founded by him , he gave a. a. Tacitus ' Germania (1882), Einhard's Vita Karoli imperatoris (1882), Jordanes ' De origine actibusque Getarum (1882) and Bedas Historia ecclesiastica (1895–1899).

His most important philological work was the "Alt-Celtische Sprachschatz" (1896-1913), a historical dictionary of the Celtic based on the ancient written tradition and the inscriptions.
