Johann Karl Adolf Mittag (born September 22, 1833 in Magdeburg ; † August 14, 1920 in Leipzig ) was an entrepreneur and patron .
Life
education
Adolf Mittag was born the son of the merchant couple Heinrich Mittag and Henriette Mittag . The parents ran a shop for retail and wholesale of trimmings under the company Heinrich Mittag at No. 30 Alter Markt . First he attended a school in Magdeburg and later the commercial school in Gnadau . He then completed a commercial apprenticeship at the Ludwig Gerber company in Leipzig , which he completed in 1853. This was followed by a job at his training company and a study visit to Vienna .
Economic commitment
When he returned to Magdeburg, he worked in his parents' trading house, which was run by Henriette Mittag after his father's death in 1847.
“We found out about the family company Mittag in a newspaper clipping: 'After the death of Joh. Ernst Heinrich Mittag, his widow, Henriette, continued the retail business with the sons. In the family, as in the military, the phrase “duty first, then family” was used. The time of the hard-won upswing began. The retail business gradually turned into a wholesale business with retail sales. Heinrich and Adolf were on the road every week from Monday to Friday, while their mother and one daughter-in-law ran the business. The second daughter-in-law ran the household for all three families and the staff together. "
Adolf Mittags Art is described as open and sociable, which made him successful on frequent business trips that the company requires. Together with his brother Heinrich Mittag , he was the owner of the company from 1860. Increasing business success led to the purchase of the former Preussischer Hof brewery in Breiten Weg 155 in 1868. This also included houses in Weinfaßstrasse no. 1 and 2. Later houses 3 and 4 were also bought. In 1869 the company moved to the new address. The retail trade was discontinued and only wholesaling was set. In 1888 Adolf and Heinrich left the company, which was continued by their younger brother Louis Mittag .
family
On November 1, 1857, Adolf Mittag married twenty-year-old Maria Christiana Felsche , daughter of the Leipzig city council and chocolate manufacturer Wilhelm Felsche, in Leipzig . Although the marriage had lasted over 50 years, the couple remained childless. In the toll road no. 16/17 in the Magdeburg district of Werder , the couple built a villa, which was demolished in August 2008.
Patronage
Adolf Mittag, who had achieved considerable wealth through his business, was very interested in the fortunes of his hometown Magdeburg. Since 1880 he was a member of the city commission for garden design . To beautify the Rotehorn Park , he donated the considerable sum of 50,000 marks to the city. Between 1906 and 1908, the amount was used to build the lake in the park, which has been called Adolf-Mittag-See ever since . The island in the lake was named Marieninsel in memory of his wife Maria Mittag, who died in 1908 .
Noon was also the church elder of the German Reformed community in Magdeburg. He donated a further 30,000 marks for the design of the north cemetery .
Adolf Mittag was also an avid cyclist and was one of the city's first high cyclists . He was a member of the city's cycling and cycle path association, which campaigned for the construction and maintenance of cycle paths and created its own association paths. Here, too, Adolf Mittag was financially involved. At times there was an Adolf Mittag refuge on a cycle path north of the city .
His open manner and his unselfish commitment made him a well-known Magdeburg original and earned him the nickname Uncle Adolf .
